Juventus

Juventus, or Juve as it is more endearingly known, is one of Italy's most celebrated football (soccer) teams. Since I am merely a Juventina by default (I could hardly support Inter or another team after marrying a die hard Juventino) I went to AmoreMio to provide me with more information about Italy's #1 team.

So these are just a few of the tidbits AmoreMio happily provided me with:

1. Juventus is also known as La Vecchia Signora, or The Old Lady. I thought this actually sounded a bit insulting when he first told me, but he says it represents wisdom and experience... not a wrinkled old lady trying to kick a ball.

2. It holds the record for most Italian Championships. Not being satisfied with my simply writing this though, AmoreMio was quick to point out that the number is actually 30... to be exact. However, he does concede that two of those wins have been removed post-victory because of bribing suspicions.

At this point AmoreMio becomes very defensive and passionately goes on to explain that it doesn't change anything. It was Del Piero that played that game and made most of those goals. Money didn't change anything. They still would have won. So in the books, Juve has 28 Championships. But in every Juventino heart, it's still 30.

For every 10 Championships, the team jersey is decorated with a star on the sleeve. Juventus is the only team in Italy to have two stars. And, AmoreMio adds bitterly, it would be 3 by now if they hadn't taken away those other two Championships.

3. Another prize in the football world is the Pallone D'Oro (the Ballon d'Or, or "Golden Ball"), which has been presented to the best European Footballer of the Year, every year, since 1956. Juventus has 8 players who have been given this award. The only other football team in Europe to match that is Barcelona.
