L'abbazia di Santo Spirito

The Abbey of the Holy Spirit, the oldest church in Caltanissetta, can be found just outside of the city and right next to the Museo Archeologico. Though the exact date of construction is unknown, it is assumed to have been built around 1092. The earliest date of which historians are sure, is the year of official consecration in 1153, thanks to a commemorative plaque.

After nearly 1000 years the church has been largely unchanged by time, most likely due to it's simple, yet sturdy, structure. The thick stone architecture and narrow windows set high in the walls create a very dark, cool interior, which is modestly decorated with frescoes and an ancient, stone basin for baptisms. AmoreMio tells me that it is still used for mass every Sunday, and that he even attended a wedding at the church... though most of the guests had to wait outside because the pews and standing room in the back could only fit about half of them.

Via Santo Spirito, 57,
