Scopa

Scopa (meaning "broom" or "to sweep") is a very popular card game here in Sicily and is played with a traditional deck of Sicilian cards.

In a Sicilian deck, the cards have four suites:

Bastoni (clubs)
Spade (spades)
Aremi or Denari (coins)
Coppe (cups)

The value of each card is represented by the number of objects on the card (1-7)

There are also three character cards for each suite:

La Donna (The Woman/Maiden) = 8 points
Il Cavallo (The Horse) = 9 points
Il Re (The King) = 10 points

If you don't have any Sicilian cards on hand, normal playing cards can be substituted. Just pull out the Jack, Queen, and King, and designate one of the suites to be the "coin" suite.

2-6 players

The object of the game is to collect 11 points.

Deal three cards to each player (face down) then place four cards face up in the center of the table. Place remaining cards in a draw deck (used to deal three additional cards to each player after all the cards in one hand have been used)

Players take turns in the same direction the cards were dealt (clockwise or counterclockwise)

To start play, match a card in your hand to a card with the same number on the table.

Example: If you have a 5 card and there is another 5 on the table, regardless of suit, you may place your 5 on this card and take both cards from the table. Set the captured cards to the side to make up your “score pile.”

If there are two or more cards whose total value equals a card in your hand you may also make a match.

Example: If you have a 9 in your hand and there is a 7 and a 2 on the table you can collect all three cards.

However, if an individual card on the table matches the card you wish to use in your hand, you must make this match.

Example: If you have a 9 in your hand and there is a 9, a 7, and a 2 on the table, then you must make the match of 9 and 9 rather than take the 7 and 2.

If you make a match which uses up all the cards on the table, you can then yell “Scopa!” to earn an extra point. A good way to make sure you remember to add this point at the end of the game is to turn one of the cards upside down before placing it in your score pile.

If you are unable to make any matches, or if the player before you has managed a "Scopa", then discard a card by placing it face up on the table. This card can now be used to make matches like any of the other face up cards.

After everyone has played or discarded all three of their cards, use the remaining deck to deal out another hand.

Continue until all of the cards in the deck are used. If cards are still left on the table at the end of the last hand, whoever made the last match may take the remaining cards. This completes Round 1.

Your “score pile” is awarded points as follows:
Each Scopa………………1 point
Most cards captured……..1 point
Most coin cards………….1 point
7 of coins…………...……1 point
King (or 10) of coins…………….…1 point

If there is a tie for the player with the most cards captured or coin cards then neither player receives a point.

Continue to play as many rounds as necessary until a player reaches 11 points in total.
